Privacy notice
Last updated: 22 October 2026
Version 1.5
The short version
- The answers you enter into SimplyEV stay on your device. Nothing you enter is sent to SimplyEV.
- SimplyEV's own code has no accounts, no forms, no cookies, no advertising and no third-party fonts or embeds.
- Usage analytics is off unless you accept it. If you tap Accept analytics, SimplyEV uses PostHog to record which screens and steps are used. It doesn't include your vehicle details or what you type. You can change your choice at any time with Privacy settings in the footer.
- SimplyEV handles three kinds of personal data: technical records kept by its web host when you load a page, usage analytics if you accept it, and any email you send to its contact address.
- You can save your answers on your device if you choose to. You can stop and delete them at any time. The Cookies and storage page lists exactly what is stored.
1. Who is responsible
Alan Shorten, an individual, operates SimplyEV in Ireland. Contact: hello@simplyev.ie.
2. What SimplyEV does not collect
- Your answers. SimplyEV works out your results on your device. It doesn't receive your answers, your VIN, your car's details or your results.
- Accounts or forms. There is no sign-up, login or contact form.
- Cookies and advertising trackers. SimplyEV's own code sets no cookies and uses no advertising or social tools. Usage analytics, if you accept it, stores identifiers in your browser's storage, not in cookies (see "The personal data SimplyEV does handle").
- Third-party resources. Fonts, icons and code are served from SimplyEV's own address. SimplyEV's own code requests nothing from any other company when a page loads. The one exception is usage analytics: only after you tap Accept analytics, your browser sends short messages to PostHog (see "The personal data SimplyEV does handle").
- Payments. SimplyEV takes no payments and handles no money.
SimplyEV's own code doesn't profile you. It receives none of your answers, so it makes no decisions about you from them.
3. The personal data SimplyEV does handle
Technical records kept by the web host
SimplyEV is hosted by Vercel Inc. When your browser loads a SimplyEV page, Vercel's systems process the request. That includes your IP address, the page address requested, the type of browser and device (the user agent), the date and time, and whether the request worked. Vercel's terms say it may collect and keep traffic data, telemetry and logs generated from its services.
- Why: to deliver the site and keep it working and secure.
- Basis: our legitimate interest in running and securing the site.
- Who holds it: Vercel.
- How long: for the period Vercel's own policies set.
SimplyEV's page addresses show which screen you are on, not your answers.
Usage analytics (only if you accept)
SimplyEV would like to understand how the guide is used so it can fix and improve it. It uses PostHog, a product-analytics service, for this. It is off unless you tap Accept analytics. Until you do, SimplyEV loads nothing from PostHog, sends nothing to PostHog and stores nothing on your device for it. If you tap Essential only, it stays off. SimplyEV works the same either way.
After you accept, SimplyEV records these events, each with the code of the screen you were on (for example 1.2):
- that a screen was opened, and the SimplyEV screen code, not the rest of the page address
- that an advice page was opened (the advice list or one advice article), or the used-EV price comparison page, with a code for that page, such as guides/ followed by the article's name or ev-price-comparison, not the rest of the page address. On those pages this is the only thing recorded. Using the price comparison page's filters records nothing
- that you started a check, finished a stage (which stage), opened My plan, printed a page with your browser's print function, or resumed a saved check
- that a Stop or Check result was shown, with SimplyEV's reason code for it. A reason code is a fixed label for the kind of result. It is worked out from your answers, so it can show that a particular step led to a Stop or Check
- that you reached the end of the last stage
- that you opened an in-page help section (which screen's help)
- that you tapped a link to an official service (which service, not the page you went to) or copied a dealer or insurer message (which screen's message, not its text)
Each message also carries technical details that PostHog's software adds: the date and time; your browser and operating system and their versions; the type of device and the size of your screen and window; your time zone; the website that sent you here, without its page details; and campaign tags in the link you followed, if there were any. It carries a random identifier that PostHog's software creates and keeps in your browser, so the messages from one browser can be linked to each other. SimplyEV doesn't create profiles of people and doesn't link the identifier to a name, email address or account. Your IP address necessarily reaches PostHog with each message, as it does with any internet request, and PostHog's systems still receive and handle the request that carries it. SimplyEV tells PostHog not to work out your location from it, and SimplyEV's PostHog project is set not to store it with the message. SimplyEV uses PostHog's EU Cloud for this analytics processing.
Your vehicle details, VIN, registration, price, odometer reading, dates, dealer or provider names, notes, saved check and the text of any message are never part of what is sent.
- Why: to see which screens, advice pages, the price comparison page, steps and help sections are used and where problems come up, so SimplyEV can improve the guide. SimplyEV's operator reads reports of totals and trends.
- Basis: your permission. You can say no and still use all of SimplyEV, and you can withdraw it at any time.
- Who holds it: PostHog Inc., which acts for SimplyEV as its service provider (processor).
- Where it goes: PostHog Inc. is a US company, so data may be processed outside the European Economic Area. PostHog states in its published data processing terms that it takes part in the EU-US Data Privacy Framework and that the European Commission's standard contractual clauses apply to transfers outside the Protected Area it describes. SimplyEV hasn't checked this beyond reading what PostHog publishes.
- How long: PostHog keeps analytics events for the retention period of SimplyEV's PostHog plan, which PostHog states is one year on its free plan. On your device, the identifier and your choice stay until you change your choice, delete your saved data or clear your browser's site data. SimplyEV asks again after 6 months if you accepted.
- Your choice: the first time you visit, a notice asks you to choose Accept analytics or Essential only. The two buttons are equal. Change your mind at any time with Privacy settings in the footer. Choosing Essential only stops messages straight away and removes PostHog's identifiers from your device. It doesn't remove messages already sent. You can ask for those to be deleted (see "Your rights"). If your browser sends a Global Privacy Control signal, SimplyEV treats it as Essential only, doesn't ask you to choose and never loads PostHog.
- Separate from saving your answers: this choice is not the same as the choice to save your answers on your device. Saying No to one doesn't change the other. Delete my saved data also stops analytics straight away, removes your analytics choice and PostHog's identifiers from your device, and brings the notice back. Nothing is sent again unless you choose Accept analytics again. Like Essential only, it doesn't remove messages already sent to PostHog.
Emails you send us
If you use Report a problem or write to hello@simplyev.ie, SimplyEV receives your email address, your name if it appears in your address or message, and whatever you write. The Report a problem link prepares an email with only a subject line. It adds nothing from your check.
- Why: to read your message, reply, and correct a problem.
- Basis: our legitimate interest in answering you and fixing problems.
- Who sees it: SimplyEV's operator, and the service that holds the mailbox.
- How long: we keep your email only for as long as we need it to deal with your message and any follow-up.
Please don't send names, phone numbers, addresses, PPSN or copies of documents. SimplyEV doesn't need them.
4. Messages you prepare for the dealer or insurer
At some steps SimplyEV writes a suggested message on your device. SimplyEV doesn't receive it or store it. You copy it and send it yourself. Once you copy it, the text is on your device's clipboard and is handled by your device and by the app you paste it into. Please don't add names, phone numbers, addresses or PPSN.
5. Other sites you choose to visit
SimplyEV links to official services. These links are loaded only when you tap them, and they open in a new tab. SimplyEV doesn't pass your SimplyEV page address to the other site. The sites you can reach are run by:
- Revenue (revenue.ie and ros.ie)
- The NCTS (ncts.ie)
- GOV.UK and the UK's HMRC (gov.uk)
- motortax.ie
- the Road Safety Authority (rsa.ie)
- nidirect (nidirect.gov.uk)
- gov.ie
- the Law Reform Commission's revised Acts (revisedacts.lawreform.ie)
- The National Archives (nationalarchives.gov.uk)
Each has its own terms and privacy notice. SimplyEV can't see what you do on them.
If you support SimplyEV
The "Support SimplyEV" links open Buy Me a Coffee, a separate service, in a new tab. SimplyEV loads nothing from Buy Me a Coffee on its own pages and doesn't know whether you open the link. Buy Me a Coffee decides what it collects and how it processes payments, under its own terms and privacy policy, so read them before you contribute. If you contribute, the person responsible for SimplyEV (named under "Who is responsible" above) receives what Buy Me a Coffee shows them about the contribution. Please don't put personal details in a message.
6. Where data goes
- Vercel Inc., SimplyEV's web host. Vercel is a US company, so request data may be processed outside the European Economic Area. Vercel's terms say personal information is processed under its Data Processing Addendum.
- The email service holding SimplyEV's contact mailbox.
- PostHog Inc., only if you accept usage analytics. See "The personal data SimplyEV does handle". SimplyEV's own code sends your answers and details to no one, including PostHog.
7. How long things are kept
| What | Where | How long |
|---|---|---|
| Your answers, if you chose to save them | Your device only | Until you delete them. If a saved check hasn't been updated for more than 6 months, the start page asks whether to keep or delete it |
| SimplyEV's own code, kept for offline use | Your device only | Until the site is updated or you clear your browser's site data |
| Web host records | Vercel | As Vercel's policies set |
| Emails to SimplyEV | The contact mailbox | As long as needed to deal with your message and any follow-up |
| Your analytics choice | Your device only | Until you change it, delete your saved data or clear your browser's site data. If you accepted, SimplyEV asks again after 6 months |
| PostHog's identifiers, only if you accepted | Your device only | Until you choose Essential only, delete your saved data or clear your browser's site data |
| Usage analytics events, only if you accepted | PostHog | The retention period of SimplyEV's PostHog plan, which PostHog states is one year on its free plan |
8. Your rights
You can ask SimplyEV's operator to give you access to your personal data, correct it, delete it, restrict how it is used, or stop using it. Write to hello@simplyev.ie. We'll respond as the law requires. Most of what SimplyEV shows you never reaches us, so for most people there is nothing for us to access or delete.
Analytics data isn't linked to your name or email address. SimplyEV can only pick out one browser's analytics events if you give it the identifier PostHog stores in that browser. If you want your analytics events deleted, write to hello@simplyev.ie and SimplyEV will explain how to find it.
Where SimplyEV relies on your permission, you can withdraw it at any time. That applies to saving your answers on your device and to usage analytics. To stop saving, choose Keep this visit only on the Delete my saved data page, or choose Delete my saved data in the footer. To stop analytics, choose Privacy settings in the footer, then Essential only. Withdrawing is as easy as giving permission. Withdrawing doesn't affect what was done while you had it on.
You can also complain to the Data Protection Commission, Ireland's data protection regulator, at dataprotection.ie.
9. Printouts and PDFs
Print or save as PDF on the two printable checklists uses your browser's print or save-as-PDF function. Your browser makes the file. SimplyEV doesn't receive it. The checklists are the same for everyone and contain none of your answers. If you print any other screen with your browser's own print command, the file can include what that screen shows, so keep it somewhere private. SimplyEV doesn't ask for your name, address or PPSN.
10. Children
SimplyEV is for adults buying a car. It isn't aimed at children.
11. Changes to this notice
The version and date at the top change when this notice changes, and What changed below says what is different.
What changed
- 1.5, 22 October 2026. Analytics now also counts when the used-EV price comparison page is opened, if you have accepted analytics. Nothing else is recorded on that page (using its filters records nothing), and the choice, the technical details and the retention are the same as for the rest of SimplyEV.
- 1.4, 17 October 2026. Analytics now also counts when an advice page is opened (the advice list or one article), if you have accepted analytics. Nothing else is recorded on those pages, and the choice, the technical details and the retention are the same as for the rest of SimplyEV.
- 1.3, 8 October 2026. Added "If you support SimplyEV": the optional link opens Buy Me a Coffee, a separate service. SimplyEV loads nothing from it and doesn't know whether you open the link.
- 1.2, 8 October 2026. Said plainly that Delete my saved data doesn't remove analytics messages already sent. No change to what is collected.
- 1.1, 7 October 2026. Updated to match the five-stage version of the guide. What is stored and how to delete it: there is no separate save-choice record, Review no longer prints or saves a copy, and the controls are now "Keep this visit only" and "Delete my saved data".
- 1.0, 6 October 2026. First version.
