Cookies and storage
Last updated: 8 October 2026
Version 1.2
The short version
- SimplyEV doesn't use cookies.
- It saves your answers on your device only if you choose Yes, save on this device. Nothing about you or your answers is stored before you choose.
- It keeps a copy of its own code in your browser so the site can work offline. That copy holds no answers and is stored from your first visit.
- Usage analytics is off unless you accept it. Only if you tap Accept analytics does PostHog's software store identifiers in your browser. Your saved answers aren't sent to PostHog. The Privacy notice explains it.
- You can stop saving and delete everything SimplyEV saved, at any time, from the footer.
1. We ask your permission to save
Saving your answers on your device so you can come back later is something SimplyEV does only with your permission. This approach is based on the Data Protection Commission's guidance on cookies and similar technologies and the ePrivacy Regulations (S.I. No. 336 of 2011), which cover storing information on your device.
- When we ask. At the end of Stage 1, SimplyEV asks: Save your progress on this device? with two buttons of equal size, Yes, save on this device and No, don't save. You can also choose at any time with Save progress on this device in My plan. Neither is chosen for you, and nothing is saved before you choose.
- Why. So you can come back to this check on this device.
- How long. Saved answers stay in this browser until you delete them. If a saved check hasn't been updated or kept for more than 6 months, the start page asks whether to Keep it or go to Delete my saved data, where you confirm before anything is deleted. Your saved check stays open and nothing is deleted without your answer.
- What is sent. Nothing is sent to SimplyEV.
- How to change your mind. Open Delete my saved data in the footer and choose Keep this visit only. It takes one tap. You can turn saving on again with Save on this device on the same page, or with Save progress on this device in My plan.
If you choose No, SimplyEV stores nothing about that choice and removes anything it had saved earlier. Because nothing is kept, the question comes up again on a later visit.
Usage analytics has its own, separate question. The notice at the top of the page offers Accept analytics and Essential only, two equal buttons, and neither is chosen for you. Nothing is stored for analytics until you tap. You can change it at any time with Privacy settings in the footer. If you accepted, SimplyEV asks again after 6 months. If your browser sends a Global Privacy Control signal, SimplyEV treats that as Essential only and stores nothing for analytics. Your answer to this question doesn't change your save choice, and your save choice doesn't change it.
2. Everything SimplyEV stores
| Where | Name | What it holds | When it is written | How to remove it |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Local storage | simplyev:journey | Your saved answers and your save choice (see below) | Only after you choose Yes, then each time you change an answer | Delete my saved data, Keep this visit only (on that page), or Start fresh if SimplyEV can't read your saved check |
| Cache storage | simplyev-app- followed by a code | SimplyEV's own pages, code and fonts, for offline use. No answers | The first time you load the site, and again when the site is updated | Your browser's site-data controls. Delete my saved data doesn't remove it, because it holds no answers |
| Local storage | simplyev.analytics | Your analytics choice (Accept or Essential only) and the date you made it | When you tap Accept analytics or Essential only, in the notice or in Privacy settings. Never before you tap | Delete my saved data. Changing your choice rewrites it |
| Local storage | ph_ followed by a code, ending _posthog | PostHog's random identifier for this browser, and PostHog's settings | Only after you tap Accept analytics | Essential only in Privacy settings, which deletes it straight away. Delete my saved data. Your browser's site-data controls |
| Session storage | ph_ followed by a code, such as _window_id, _primary_window_exists and _session_registered_properties | PostHog's identifiers for this tab and visit, and the details it adds to messages (for example your browser and the site that sent you). Cleared by the browser when the tab closes | Only after you tap Accept analytics | Essential only in Privacy settings. Delete my saved data. Closing the tab |
SimplyEV doesn't use cookies or IndexedDB. It uses session storage only for PostHog, and only after you accept analytics. It stores no advertising or tracking identifier. Until you tap Accept analytics, SimplyEV stores nothing for analytics, and Essential only leaves PostHog unloaded. Your saved answers are not sent to PostHog.
What your saved answers contain. Your answers to the questions you've completed: choices from fixed lists (for example "Yes" or "Not sure"), yes-or-no answers and a few optional dates you enter, which are the planned registration date, the invoice date, the date the car enters Ireland and your appointment date. It also keeps your save choice. SimplyEV adds some details of its own: a random journey ID that never leaves your device, the dates and times your check was created and last updated, how far through the five stages you have got, when you chose Keep it at a prompt, when each result was confirmed and which version of the rules it used, when a result was marked for rechecking, and the date you recorded certain answers (for example the date you answered the VAT questions, and the date you saved an appointment).
SimplyEV never asks for your name, address, date of birth, PPSN or the car's registration number or VIN. It doesn't store a vehicle name, odometer reading, first registration date, history-report provider, battery figures, insurance details, a deposit or payment amount, or any text you have typed.
Messages for the dealer or insurer. The text of a prepared message is not saved.
3. How to delete
- Keep this visit only. On the Delete my saved data page. Deletes your saved answers and turns saving off. One tap.
- Delete my saved data. In the footer, on the start page, in My plan (Delete next to Saved on this device) and on the Start over or stop screen. Deletes everything SimplyEV saved on this device, including your saved check and your save choice, and your analytics choice and PostHog's identifiers. Analytics then stops and the privacy notice asks again. On the Delete my saved data page it asks you to confirm. It can't be undone. It doesn't remove the offline copy of SimplyEV's own code (see the table above), and it doesn't remove analytics messages already sent to PostHog (see the Privacy notice).
- Your browser. Clearing the site data for simplyev.ie in your browser's settings deletes everything above, including the offline copy.
4. Things to know
- Anyone using this device could see your saved answers. Using a private window, clearing your browser data, or switching device loses them.
- If your browser doesn't let SimplyEV save, you can carry on. Your answers last until you close or refresh the page.
- If you open SimplyEV in two tabs, the last change saved is the one that stays.
- Print or save as PDF on the two printable checklists uses your browser's print or save-as-PDF function. The checklists are the same for everyone and contain none of your answers. If you print any other screen with your browser's own print command, the file can include what that screen shows, so keep it somewhere private.
- Copy message puts the message text on your device's clipboard. Your device and the app you paste into handle it from there.
- Your browser keeps its own history of pages you visit, including pages you open from SimplyEV. SimplyEV doesn't control that. SimplyEV's page addresses show which screen you're on, not your answers.
5. Who can read what SimplyEV stores
These items are kept in your browser. They are not sent to SimplyEV. PostHog's software runs only after you accept analytics. It is a copy served from SimplyEV's own address. Its messages go to PostHog and carry only what the Privacy notice lists. SimplyEV's operator can't see what is stored on your device.
